We spoke with Jim Marks, VP of Food Service, Hospitality, and Retail at Diversey, to delve into the company’s offerings and how it supports Foodbuy Members.

A Legacy of Excellence

Diversey traces its roots back to 1923, when it was founded in Chicago by August and Herbert Kochs as a division of their Victor Chemical Works cleaning products company. The name “Diversey” was derived during a lunchtime discussion, where the founders sought a name that “would not limit them, one that had no connotation and did not mean a thing”. They found inspiration from the street sign of Diversey Avenue in Chicago, and thus, the name was born. Today, Diversey operates from its headquarters in Fort Mill, South Carolina, with a mission to go beyond clean to take care of what’s precious and care for people through leading hygiene, infection prevention, and cleaning solutions.

Commitment to Sustainability

Diversey’s sustainability strategy, “Facilitators for Life,” comprises 12 goals across three pillars: Social Responsibility, Environmental Stewardship, and Sustainable Innovations. Following the classic triple bottom line model of people, planet, and profit, Diversey emphasizes the value its products and technologies bring to customers and the industry. Environmental goals focus on supply chain; Diversey has a 10% reduction target for greenhouse gas, energy, and waste.

“We also have a goal around engaging our suppliers on sustainability with a supplier code of conduct that addresses safety, environmental issues, and governance, which helps us ensure our suppliers are following the best international practices as it relates to environmental stewardship and social responsibility”, says Jim Marks, VP of Food Service, Hospitality, and Retail.

Diversey’s focus on product stewardship includes reducing packaging footprint and promoting the responsible use of chemicals. Adding to this, Jim says, “When we think about our industry, we think of our products and services and the sustainability value that we can bring to the marketplace.” The company prioritizes the safety of customers, building occupants, and employees by avoiding the use of chemicals of concern.

Jim shares, “We use a sustainability scorecard for all our innovations. Every new product that we’ve launched as a company utilizes a method to identify sustainability opportunities. Even if sustainability is not the key driver for innovation, we often find ways to improve sustainability across the lifecycle of our innovations.”
